The cat ignores its owner—indifference or subtle communication?
People often say that cats do as they please, and those who don’t know them accuse them of being aloof and haughty. But is that really the case??Or maybe these animals actually like to cuddle and seek human attention?
A cat's sense of closeness – how it works?
Cats are capable of forming complex social bonds. They form relationships not only within their own species, but also with other animals, and above all, with humans. The strength of such a bond depends on many factors: the course of early socialization, past experiences, and the individual’s temperament. It turns out that—just like with humans—there are both introverts and sociable extroverts among cats.
However, it’s worth asking ourselves another, equally important question: what does “closeness” mean to a cat??People often associate affection with physical contact—spending time together, hugging, or holding hands.Meanwhile, the furry family member feels close when...can follow someone. It doesn't need to be touched, licked, or rubbed against another being. He doesn't have to sleep cuddled up—though he does sometimes.Physical intimacy usually doesn't develop until the relationship becomes truly close. The most intimate gesture in the cat world is when they groom each other’s muzzles, heads, and especially ears.
Does this mean that individuals who do not groom each other feel aversion toward one another??Not necessarily.Sometimes they’re just indifferent to each other or merely tolerate one another, without any deeper feelings.
How your cat spends time with you?
Now that you know this, try looking back and thinking about how your cat spends time with you. What does he do when you're home??How does the child divide their time among different activities—how much time do they spend playing, napping, eating, being cared for, looking out the window, or interacting with other household members (if any)??
Once you’ve figured out, even roughly, what his daily routine looks like, ask yourself the next question: which of these activities does he do while you’re with him—that is, in the same room? This is the answer to the question, “How much time does my cat spend with me?”—even if not in direct contact.
In the cat world, napping at opposite ends of the same couch is still considered spending time together, not being alone. It’s worth remembering that no cat will feel completely at ease around someone with whom it doesn’t feel safe and secure. So if your pet comes to where you work, relax, or go about your daily routine—and settles down to sleep, starts playing, or grooms itself right there—it’s a sign that they want to be close to you. It’s worth recognizing and appreciating.
Do cats know when we call them??
Most often, the answer to this question is: yes.Cats’ reactions to specific words spoken by their owners have been studied many times—and each time the same conclusion has been confirmed: cats are perfectly capable of recognizing when they are being called by name.
So why do they often ignore us??The reason is simple—we usually don’t offer them anything interesting enough to make it worth interrupting what they’re currently doing.Coming just "on principle" doesn't convince them at all.
Of course, you can train your cat to respond to commands, but let’s be honest—you won’t achieve 100% success. After all, we're the ones who are used to indulging their whims, not the other way around. The cat simply sees no reason to switch those roles.
Does that mean they'll always ignore us??Absolutely not! It's just that they're usually the ones who decide when, for how long, and under what conditions they'll feel like getting in touch. And if we ignore their signals and cross their boundaries, they can make it very clear that they’re not interested in any further intimacy.
Is your cat ignoring you??
Perhaps somewhere in the world there are cats that truly pay no attention at all to the people with whom they share their space. However, in the vast majority of cases, this is not the result of deliberate action.Cats are simply less expressive when it comes to showing their emotions, which can give the impression of indifference, aloofness, or haughtiness. In reality, it's often just appearances. All it takes is a closer look at a cat’s nature, an understanding of how they communicate and the dynamics of bonding, to realize that the feelings they have for their owners are genuine—even if expressed in their own unique way.It is in these subtle gestures—being in the same room, a quiet purr, a gentle brush of the tail, or a calm gaze—that the feline version of love lies. And it’s worth appreciating.
