So where does the belief that chicken protein is highly allergenic come from??Scientific research does not support this.Epidemiological studies indicate that the most common sources of allergens in a dog’s diet are: cow’s milk, beef, wheat, lamb, eggs, pork, herring, cod, corn, rabbit, and beans.Chicken is one of the less commonly cited causes of food allergy symptoms in pets—although it should be noted that chicken protein is also listed as a potential allergen.In theory, any type of protein can trigger an allergic reaction, so this also applies to chicken protein.Close observation by the dog or cat owner can help detect it early on, and switching to a single-protein diet based on a different protein source is the best dietary approach in cases of food allergies.At this point, it should be noted that even new sources of protein in a dog’s diet, m.in.insect protein also belongs to the group of potentially allergenic ingredients.Many scientific publications confirm these observations.So, should we be afraid of chicken and chicken products??Definitely not.As with any type of protein, chicken can cause an allergic reaction, but that doesn’t mean you should automatically exclude it entirely from your pet’s diet.Its high nutritional value is a good reason to try incorporating chicken into your diet as a primary source of protein and fat.
A wealth of nutrients
So, aside from its nutritional value, what other reasons might there be for feeding chicken to a dog or cat??First and foremost, during their growth, poultry make very efficient use of the nutritional value of the feed they are given.For this reason, it is very easy to incorporate a range of biologically active compounds into chicken tissue that exhibit dietary preventive properties.Chicken and chicken products represent new sources of functional foods.Modification of the amino acid composition of protein (increasing the amount of methionine), and the fatty acid composition (increasing the levels of n-3 and n-6 fatty acids), as well as increasing the levels of selenium, zinc, and vitamin E, are just a few of the nutritional changes used in poultry nutrition.In turn, adding algae to the chickens’ diet—as a source of astaxanthin (one of the most potent antioxidants), humic acids, and hydrolyzed plant materials—further increases the content of biologically active substances in their meat.A proper diet for chickens, which influences the fatty acid composition of poultry fat, makes it a highly valuable functional ingredient in the food industry—not only in the production of animal feed but also in products consumed by humans.By eliminating this type of ingredient from a dog or cat’s diet, we are also depriving them of valuable substances that help prevent dietary-related health issues.It is worth considering this argument in the discussion regarding the safety of using chicken in pet diets.
Chicken should be a key component of a dog or cat’s diet, and there is no reason to treat it any differently than other animal-based products.As with other sources of protein, the only contraindication is a food allergy to chicken protein.In this case, feeding a single-protein diet based on a different protein source is the best way to care for a pet with allergies.
